Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor won nine Academy Awards, unexpectedly sweeping every category in which it was nominated—quite a feat for a challenging, multilayered epic directed by an Italian and starring an international cast. Yet the scope of the film was, and remains, undeniably powerful—the life of Emperor Puyi, who took the throne in 1908, at age three, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval within and without the walls of the Forbidden City. Recreating Qing-dynasty China with astonishing detail and unparalleled craftsmanship by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, The Last Emperor is also an intimate character study of one man reconciling personal responsibility and political legacy. Prepare for 17 newly adventures featuring our favorite spinach-eating sailor man and his lovely leading lady, Olive Oyl. This set finishes out Popeye's second decade of screen stardom with cartoons originally released to movie theaters in 1948 and 1949. Providing more globe-trotting and time-traveling adventures, the cartoons have been restored to look their lavish best utilizing the techniques of three classic color systems. The Polacolor process was a short-lived 3-strip technique designed to be an alternative to Technicolor . The studio gave it a try on a group of cartoons produced during this period, and the results are particularly striking -- with fresh restorations that now show their proper, vibrant hues. In these cartoons, Popeye and Olive travel back to prehistoric times, ancient Greece and the Sherwood Forest. They visit Plymouth Rock and the Old West, then battle assorted baddies in the Egyptian desert, the freezing Arctic and the Ozarks. Of course, Bluto is back as Popeye's number-one nemesis, tackling the sailor man as a rival lumberjack, a fanatic flying ace and a lecherous vaudeville hypnotist. But that's not all. Popeye also has his fists full with a pair of pet dogs, irritating houseflies and a quartet of spinach-hating, sound-alike nephews. He ultimately meets his match when Olive decides to throw her hat in the ring and makes a run for U.S. president! Hilarious sight gags, gorgeous cartoon art and more action-packed goodness from the golden age of animation: Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s, Volume 3 will leave you rooting -- and toot-tooting -- for more!

Description

Adapted from Émile Zola s novel of the same name, L Argent is an all-too-timely work of filmmaking loosely based off of the 1882 collapse of Union Générale bank, which subsequently crashed the stock market and plunged France into a decade-long recession. Helmed by Marcel L Herbier, one of the original members of French cinema s avant-garde, the film uses Zola s tale of mid-1800s stock market speculation to comment on the 1920s greed-fueled fascination with global economies. The story centers on the unscrupulous Nicolas Saccard, played by Pierre Alcover, who makes a bad bet, loses his societal standing and his mistress, and tries to recoup it all by backing an aviator with a daredevil plan to cross the Atlantic to exploit raw materials in the New World. L Argent is L Herbier s silent-era swan song. Known for his ability to translate artistic and innovative sensibilities into commercial fare, L Herbier designed the film to compete with the super-productions coming out of France, United States, and Germany at the time. It is thus bursting with state-of-the-art techniques, a big-name international cast, 1500 extras, and was shot by France s highest paid cameraman at the time, Jules Krüger. L Herbier made use of a dozen cameramen flying on pulleys and dollies, as well as an unmanned camera that descended and revolved to capture the stock exchange in full frenzy. Even as the pilot embarks on his trans-Atlantic flight, action on the stock market floor intensifies in a montage of Eisensteinian proportions. L Argent was forgotten by many until it was reconstructed in the 1970s, and did not receive a proper preservation until the 1990s. Now, thanks to Lobster Films with the support of Marie-Ange L Herbier (the director s daughter), the French CNC and SACEM, the original camera negative of this silent classic has been rescanned at a pristine 4K resolution. Flicker Alley s publication of L Argent features a new score from Olivier Massot, preformed by the National Orchestra of Lyon under the direction of Timothy Brock, and an earlier orchestral adaptation from Rodney Sauer, preformed by the Mont Alto Orchestra. Also included in this deluxe edition is The Making of L Argent, one of the first-ever behind-the-scenes documentaries of a feature film. This bonus featurette, complete with a new 4K restoration from the original 35mm elements, and two new musical compositions, including a fascinating score by Tempsion, is a masterpiece in itself. BONUS MATERIALS INCLUDE: The Making of L Argent (Autour de L Argent) : A pioneering documentary, directed by L Herbier s assistant Jean Dreville, featuring incredible footage of the cast and crew during the actual production as well as the director s comments recorded later in 1971 (39 minutes). The Two Restorations of Autour de L Argent : A restoration demonstration of Autour de L Argent with Serge Bromberg (5 min) Prometheus Banker (Prométhée Banquier) : A perfect thematic complement to L Argent, complete with new restoration, this short film by Marcel L Herbier tells the story of a banker-seducing vampire (15 minutes). Souvenir Booklet : Featuring an essay by Mireille Beaulieu and collection of unique photographs and promotional material recently discovered in Mrs. L Herbier s collection. In 1971, author and film scholar Donald Richie published a poetic travelogue about his explorations of the islands of Japan’s Inland Sea, recording his search for traces of a traditional way of life as well as his own journey of self discovery. Twenty years later, filmmaker Lucille Carra undertook a parallel trip inspired by Richie’s by then classic book, capturing images of hushed beauty and meeting people who still carried on the fading customs that Richie had observed. Interspersed with surprising detours—a visit to a Frank Sinatra–loving monk, a leper colony, an ersatz temple of plywood and plaster—and woven together by Richie’s narration as well as a score by celebrated composer Toru Takemitsu, The Inland Sea is an eye opening voyage and a profound meditation on what it means to be a foreigner. DIRECTOR APPROVED BLU RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New, restored 4K digital transfer, supervised by cinematographer Hiro Narita, with uncompressed stereo soundtrack • New interview with director Lucille Carra • New conversation between filmmaker Paul Schrader and cultural critic Ian Buruma on author Donald Richie • Interview with Richie from 1991 • New English subtitle translation • PLUS: An essay by scholar Arturo Silva Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews The Inland Sea (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

A shell-shocking saga of mutants, martial arts, New York mayhem, comic book grit, practical effects wizardry and pizza-fuelled fun. A shell-shocking saga of mutants, martial arts and New York mayhem, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy brought comic book grit, practical effects wizardry and pizza-fuelled fun to a generation of moviegoers, helping turn four sewer-dwelling brothers into global pop culture icons. Launching in 1990 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, director Steve Barron's gritty, high-energy adaptation of the underground comic became a box office phenomenon, fusing martial arts action, streetwise humor and the groundbreaking animatronics of Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The 1991 sequel The Secret of the Ooze is an irresistibly fun second slice: a deep-dive into the turtles' origins where new mutant foes Tokka and Rahzar are thrown in the mix... double the stakes, double the pizza! An unseen evil terrorizes an isolated homestead in this chilling tale of madness, paranoia, and otherworldly horror. Lizzy (Caitlin Gerard) is a tough, resourceful frontierswoman settling a remote stretch of land on the 19th-century American frontier. Far from civilization in a desolate wilderness where the wind never stops howling, she begins to sense a sinister presence that seems to be borne of the land itself—an overwhelming presence that her husband (Ashley Zukerman) dismisses as mere superstition. When a newlywed couple arrives on a nearby homestead, their presence amplifies Lizzy's fears, setting into motion a shocking chain of events. Masterfully blending haunting visuals with pulse-pounding sound design, director Emma Tammi evokes a godforsaken world in which the forces of nature come alive with quivering menace.

The rivers are wide and rapid. The desert is vast and unforgiving. And when the trail turns craggy, men use pickaxes to dig grooves for the wagon wheels. Mother Nature can be overcome, but human nature remains deadly and unpredictable: Outlaws are using the Mormon wagon train as a hideout from a pursuing posse. John Ford's Wagon Master is one of the legendary filmmaker's personal favorites, a visually stirring celebration of Western will and cooperation set to the soundtrack crooning of the Sons of the Pioneers. Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., Ward Bond (who would later lead TV's Wagon Train) and other familiar Ford stock company players take the reins in this glorious paean to the pioneer spirit. "Wagons west!"
