The performances and realistic locations set this film apart from a lot of music-related biopics. There's a realism drawn from the Deep South film sites and seemingly locally-sourced extras that bring added credibility, likely a natural extension of director Michael Apted's documentarian bona fides. I think the added dynamic of having an outsider, a Brit, in the director's seat introduces a fresh perspective. Spacek and TL Jones stand out, as does Levon Helm as Loretta Lynn's father.
