Description

IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TONIGHT… Described by critic Mark Kermode as an “extraordinary filmmaker” and “one of the UK’s most imaginative talents”, visionary British director Philip Ridley followed his sensational debut The Reflecting Skin with another surreal incursion into the dark heart of the 'American dream' in The Passion of Darkly Noon. Darkly Noon (Brendan Fraser) is the sole survivor of a military-style attack on an isolated religious community. Stumbling through a forest in a daze, he is rescued by the free-spirited and enigmatic Callie (Ashley Judd). Darkly finds himself feeling strange new desires for Callie as she nurses him back to health… only to watch her jump into the arms of her returning mute lover Clay (Viggo Mortensen). Lost in the woods with only his fundamentalist upbringing to make sense of his unrequited passions, Darkly soon descends into an explosive and lethal rage. Now available for the first time worldwide on Blu-ray™, Ridley’s talent for spellbinding, hallucinogenic dream imagery is on full display in a glittering new transfer of his most formally inventive and electrifying film. The mesmerising soundtrack includes two songs co-written by Ridley for the film, “Look What You’ve Done (To My Skin)” performed by Gavin Friday and “Who Will Love Me Now?” performed by PJ Harvey. SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS New 2K restoration by Arrow Films from the original camera negative, approved by Philip Ridley High Definition Blu-ray™ (1080p) presentation Original 5.1 and 2.0 DTS-HD MA audio English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing New audio commentary by writer/director Philip Ridley Isolated score track in lossless stereo, including never-before-heard extended and unused cues, and the two songs from the film Sharp Cuts, a newly filmed interview with editor Leslie Healey Forest Songs, a newly filmed interview with composer Nick Bicât Dreaming Darkly, an archive featurette from 2015 featuring interviews with Ridley, Bicât and star Viggo Mortensen Previously unreleased demos of the music score, written and performed by Bicât before filming started Theatrical trailer Image gallery Reversible sleeve featuring new and original artwork FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring a new Philip Ridley career retrospective written by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas

The original Ringo films introduced another iconic hero to the spaghetti western; a clean-cut sharp shooter who was markedly different to Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name. In A Pistol For Ringo, the eponymous hero, played by Giuliano Gemma (Day of Anger, Tenebrae), infiltrates a ranch of Mexican bandits to save a beautiful hostage (Nieves Navarro, Death Walks on High Heels). In The Return Of Ringo, the gunslinger, now a veteran of war, disguises himself as a Mexican in order to take revenge on outlaws who have stolen his property and taken his wife. Hugely successful upon their original release, thanks in part to the skilled direction of Duccio Tessari (The Bloodstained Butterfly, Death Occurred Last Night), the Ringo films proved influential on the Italian western, spawning numerous unofficial sequels, due to their gripping set-pieces and unforgettable musical scoring by Ennio Morricone. Arrow Video is proud to present both films in sumptuous new restorations that truly brings their stylish cinematography to life. In one of his first-ever roles, a young Jack Nicholson stars as Lt. Andre Duvalier, a soldier in Napoleon's army in 19th century France, separated from his regiment. He awakens on a beach to the sight of a strange woman who leads him to the gothic, towering castle that serves as home to eerie Baron Von Leppe (Boris Karloff). But, as Duvalier soon discovers, nothing is what it seems in this ghastly, haunted mansion of death! This underground favorite was made in classic Roger Cormanfashion, making the most of his resources to bring yet another film to life on a minimal budget for his producers at American International Pictures. Short on time himself (there were more movies to be made!), Corman left it to a few of the aspiring directors within his crew (among them, Jack Hill, a young Francis Coppola, and even Jack Nicholson taking a turn behind the camera for a few scenes) to help see the film to completion. The Terror would go on to become a drive-in favorite and late-night TV staple, also appearing under the titles the Terror, Lady of the Shadows and the Castle of Terror.

What could be scarier than an all-night "Horrorthon"? A group of film students finds out when they stage just such an event at an abandoned movie palace. In addition to the three features MOSQUITO, THE ATTACK OF THE AMAZING ELECTRIFIED MAN and THE STENCH, they decide to screen a bizarre short called THE POSSESSOR, whose creator, Lanyard Gates, killed his family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. Has Gates survived to continue THE POSSESSOR's deadly legacy? A loving homage to 50s/ 60s B-movies (the trio of flicks shown at the Horrorthon all have accompanying William Castle-style gimmicks), POPCORN is also an insanely fun horror/comedy in its own right. Pseudonymously written by Alan Ormsby (CAT PEOPLE, DEATHDREAM), who directed the films-within-the-film, it celebrates the joys of old-fashioned creature features and 80s-style stalk-and-slay, with a great cast additionally including Dee Wallace (THE HOWLING), Tony Roberts (AMITYVILLE 3-D), Ray Walston (THE STAND), Malcolm Danare (CHRISTINE) and Kelly Jo Minter (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5). The cornerstone of director Richard Linklater’s career‑long exploration of cinematic time, this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, and strains over the course of almost two decades. Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke imbue their characters with a sense of lived-in experience, and age on-screen along with them. Attuned to the sweeping grandeur of time’s passage as well as the evanescence of individual moments, the Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life. DIRECTOR-APPROVED THREE-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New, restored 2K digital transfers of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset and a 2K digital master of Before Midnight, approved by director Richard Linklater, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on Before Sunrise and 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks on Before Sunset and Before Midnight New discussion featuring Linklater and actors Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, moderated by critic Kent Jones Behind-the-scenes footage and interviews from the productions of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset Audio commentary on Before Midnight by Delpy, Linklater, and Hawke Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny, a feature-length 2016 documentary by Louis Black and Karen Bernstein After Before, a new documentary by Athina Rachel Tsangari about the making of Before Midnight in Greece New conversation between scholars Dave Johnson and Rob Stone about Linklater’s work Episode of the radio program Fresh Air featuring host Terry Gross, Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke Linklater // On Cinema & Time, a 2016 video essay by filmmaker :: kogonada English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay on the trilogy by critic Dennis Lim BEFORE SUNRISE An exquisitely understated ode to the thrill of romantic possibility, the inaugural installment of The Before Trilogy opens with a chance encounter between two solitary young strangers. After they hit it off on a train bound for Vienna, the Paris university student Celine and the scrappy American tourist Jesse impulsively decide to spend a day together before he returns to the U.S. the next morning. As the pair roam the streets of the stately city, Richard Linklater’s tenderly observant gaze captures the uncertainty and intoxication of young love, from the first awkward stirrings of attraction to the hopeful promise that Celine and Jesse make upon their inevitable parting. BEFORE SUNSET In the breathtaking follow-up to Before Sunrise, Celine tracks down Jesse, now an author, at the tail end of his book tour in Paris, with only a few hours left before he is to board a flight back home to the States. Meeting almost a decade after their short-lived romance in Vienna, the pair find their chemistry rekindled by increasingly candid exchanges about professional setbacks, marital disappointments, and the compromises of adulthood. Impelled by an urgent sense of the transience of human connection, Before Sunset remains Richard Linklater’s most seductive experiment with time’s inexorable passage and the way love can seem to stop it in its tracks. BEFORE MIDNIGHT The conclusion of The Before Trilogy finds Celine and Jesse several years into a relationship and in the midst of a sun-dappled Greek retreat with their twin daughters and a group of friends. The couple soon find their vacation upended, however, by long-simmering problems that come to a boil. Marked by the emotional depth, piercing wit, and conversational exuberance that Linklater and his actors honed over two decades of abiding with these characters, Before Midnight grapples with the complexities of long-term intimacy, and asks what becomes of love when it has no recourse to its past illusions.

Product Description The specter of his domineering mother won't leave poor Norman Bates alone in this suspenseful and intriguing second sequel to the Hitchcock classic. Amazon.com For this second sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's genre-defining thriller Psycho, star Anthony Perkins not only reprised his role as the personality-conflicted antihero Norman Bates, but also made his directorial debut, with often surprisingly solid results. Perkins wisely takes his cues from the master himself for Psycho III, tipping his hat to Vertigo with an opening sequence in which novice nun Diana Scarwid's failed suicide attempt results in an accidental death. The defrocked Scarwid takes to the road with a would-be musician (Jeff Fahey, Lost, Machete), only to end up at the Bates Motel, which is still presided over by the seemingly rehabilitated Norman. But one look at Scarwid, whose character not only resembles but shares the same initials as Norman's most famous victim, Marion Crane, and the wheels are set in motion for another murder spree to break out on the grounds of the now notorious motel. The presence of Perkins in the director's chair for Psycho III proves to be one of the film's greatest assets, as he not only pays tribute to the original but keeps matters moving at a brisk pace with more than a few stylistic flourishes. The script by Charles Edward Pogue (The Fly) also attempts to layer levels of psychological complexity into the picture, but their best efforts are frequently undone by unnecessarily gratuitous levels of violence and cheap sleaze introduced in the belief that viewers would not sit through a bloodless horror film. The exploitative elements don't mix well with the craftsmanship attempted by Perkins and Pogue, resulting in an off-kilter final effort that pleased few, as evidenced by the picture's low box-office take. Viewed over a quarter century later, Psycho III is a fitfully interesting picture hampered by the desire of competing parties to present a movie that would appeal to all audiences. The Scream Factory Blu-ray is highlighted by a feature-length commentary track by Pogue, who discusses his collaboration with Perkins and their frequent run-ins with Universal over the direction of the film, including proposed alternate storylines and endings. Interviews with a gregarious Fahey, actress-turned-director Katt Shea (who played one of Norman's victims) and B queen Brinke Stevens, who served as Scarwid's body double, are full of intriguing anecdotes and should please fans of the film. The disc is rounded out by a talk with special makeup effects creator Michael Westmore, who describes the construction of Mother, among other designs, as well as a trailer and TV spot and a staggering amount of promotional and publicity stills. --Paul Gaita
