Description

A spectacle of magnificent proportions and remarkable intimacy, Kon Ichikawa’s Tokyo Olympiad remains one of the greatest films ever made about sports. Supervising a team of hundreds of technicians using more than a thousand cameras, Ichikawa captured the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo in glorious widescreen images, using cutting-edge telephoto lenses and exquisite slow motion to create lyrical, idiosyncratic poetry from the athletic drama surging all around him. Drawn equally to the psychology of losers and winners—including legendary Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bikila, who receives the film’s most exalted tribute—Ichikawa captures the triumph, passion, and suffering of competition with a singular humanistic vision, and in doing so effects a transformative influence on the art of documentary filmmaking. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • Audio commentary from 2001 by film historian Peter Cowie • New introduction to the film by Cowie • Eighty minutes of additional material from the Tokyo Games, with a new introduction by Cowie • Archival interviews with director Kon Ichikawa • New documentary about Ichikawa featuring interviews with cameraman Masuo Yamaguchi, longtime Ichikawa collaborator Chizuko Osaka, and the director’s son Tatsumi Ichikawa • Trailers • New English subtitle translation • PLUS: An essay by film scholar James Quandt

Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Bob Crane has long maintained a psychic connection to his twin sister, Jessica, who works as a fashion model in Milan. When Bob senses that his sister might be injured or killed, he travels to Italy to look for her, only to discover that she's vanished without a trace. Enlisting the help of about-to-retire Commissioner Danesi, Bob soon finds himself embroiled in a web of mystery and terror, when a scissors wielding killer begins to strike and all clues lead back to Jessica... A highly entertaining and unexpectedly raunchy late period giallo, clearly taking a cue from the American slasher craze, Carlo Vanzina's NOTHING UNDERNEATH amps up its mid 80s stylings and stars prolific TV actor Tom Schanley (TV's Dexter), Danish fashion model Renée Simonsen, and Donald Pleasence (Halloween) and features a lush score by Pino Donaggio (Dressed to Kill). A group of high fashion models have been invited to an isolated house to attend a party. As the night wears on, one of the models falls victim to a deadly 'accident,' which sets into motion a series of brutal murders, all traced back to a shocking secret... An in name only sequel to Nothing Underneath, prolific commercial director Dario Piana's feature film debut, TOO BEAUTIFUL TO DIE (Nothing Underneath II in Italy), is a quickly paced, ultra stylized, and satisfyingly violent giallo/slasher hybrid which stars French TV star François-Eric Gendron, Florence Guérin (Faceless), and Randi Ingerman (The Two Jakes). Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents both NOTHING UNDERNEATH and TOO BEAUTIFUL TO DIE on English language Blu-ray for the first time, newly restored 4K from their original 35mm camera negatives and bursting with exclusive special features. Bonus Features: 1. Region Free 2-disc Blu-ray Set 2. Newly scanned & restored in 4k from their 35mm original negatives 3. Both films presented in their original English language soundtrack along with an optional Italian dub track (untranslated) 4. Reversible cover artwork 5. English SDH subtitles for both films Disc #1 NOTHING UNDERNEATH • Commentary track by The Hysteria Continues! • Commentary track by film historian and critic Rachael Nisbet • "Murders a la mode" - an interview with screenwriter Enrico Vanzina • "Murder He Wrote" - an interview with screenwriter Franco Ferrini • "High Fashion Music" - an interview with composer Pino Donaggio • "Models, Murders and Italy" - an interview with actor Tom Schanley Disc #2 TOO BEAUTIFUL TO DIE • Commentary track by film historian and critic Rachael Nisbet • "Nothing True But The Eyes" - an interview with writer/director Dario Piana • Alternate ending storyboards • Deleted Scenes Storyboards Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews Nothing Underneath / Too Beautiful to Die

It's true that sometimes dead is better, but for two New England filmmakers, the story of Stephen King's Pet Sematary was far too alluring to leave buried. That's why John Campopiano and Justin White spent nearly five years seeking to uncover the story - from book, to film, to cult status - amounting to the most comprehensive look at the horror classic ever produced. Unearthed And Untold: The Path To Pet Sematary is both an in-depth independent documentary and celebration of King's classic tale of terror, told through the voices of cast and crew from the 1989 hit film, as well as locals in Maine - the place where it all started. In addition to first time ever interviews, tours of the many iconic locations used in the film and never-before-seen photographs and home video from the set, this film explores the impact Pet Sematary has not only on horror fans, but scholars of Stephen King's work. In Munich in 1972, eight renowned filmmakers each brought their singular artistry to the spectacle of the Olympic Games—the joy and pain of competition, the kinetic thrill of bodies in motion—for an aesthetically adventurous sports film unlike any other. Made to document the Olympic Summer Games—an event that was ultimately overshadowed by the tragedy of a terrorist attack—Visions of Eight features contributions from Miloš Forman, Kon Ichikawa, Claude Lelouch, Juri Ozerov, Arthur Penn, Michael Pfleghar, John Schlesinger, and Mai Zetterling, each given carte blanche to create a short focusing on any aspect of the Games that captured his or her imagination. The resulting films—ranging from the arresting abstraction of Penn’s pure cinema study of pole-vaulters to the playful irreverence of Forman’s musical take on the decathlon to Schlesinger’s haunting portrait of the single-minded solitude of a marathon runner—are triumphs of personal, poetic vision applied to one of the pinnacles of human achievement. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • New audio commentary by podcasters Amanda Dobbins, Sean Fennessey, and Chris Ryan of the website the Ringer • New documentary featuring director Claude Lelouch; supervising editor Robert K. Lambert; Ousmane Sembène biographer Samba Gadjigo; Munich Olympic Games historian David Clay Large; producer David L. Wolper’s son, Mark Wolper; and director Arthur Penn’s son Matthew Penn, which also includes behind-the-scenes footage from the film and material from Sembène’s uncompleted short film • On Location with “Visions of Eight,” a short promotional film • Trailer • New English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: A 1973 article by author George Plimpton, excerpts from David L. Wolper’s 2003 memoir, and a new reflection on the film by novelist Sam Lipsyte Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews Visions of Eight (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
