Description
Picking up where Volume One left off, this sophomore collection of Hong Kong cinema classics draws together many of the best films from the final years of the Shaw Brothers studio, proving that while the end was nigh, these merchants of martial arts mayhem weren’t going to go out without a fight! Armed with stunning special features and ravishing new restorations, this boxset is even bigger and bolder than the last one. We begin with kung fu master Lau Kar-leung’s instant classic The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, in which his adoptive brother Gordon Liu achieved overnight stardom as the young man who unexpectedly finds spiritual enlightenment on the path to vengeance; Lau and Liu followed the original with two comically inventive sequels, Return to the 36th Chamber and Disciples of the 36th Chamber, both included here. Already established as a genius at blending dazzling action with physical comedy, Lau himself plays the lead role in the hilarious Mad Monkey Kung Fu, coupled here with Lo Mar’s underrated Five Superfighters. Next, we once again meet Chang Cheh’s basher boy band the Venom Mob in no less than four of their best-loved team-ups: Invincible Shaolin, The Kid with the Golden Arm, Magnificent Ruffians and culminating in the all-star Ten Tigers of Kwangtung, co-starring Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. After Lau brings us perhaps his best high-kicking comedy with My Young Auntie, a playful star vehicle for his real-life muse Kara Hui, we see Shaw Brothers fully embracing Eighties excess in our strangest double feature yet: Wong Jing’s breathtakingly wild shoot-‘em-up Mercenaries from Hong Kong, and Kuei Chih-hung’s spectacularly unhinged black magic meltdown The Boxer’s Omen. Last but certainly not least, Lau Kar-leung directs the last major Shaw production, Martial Arts of Shaolin, filmed in mainland China with a hot new talent named Jet Li in the lead role; it is paired in this set with The Bare-Footed Kid, a reverent remake of a Chang Cheh classic with Johnnie To (Running Out of Time) in the director’s chair and Lau back on fight choreography duties, in arguably the ultimate filmed tribute to Shaws’ everlasting cinematic legacy. Product Description Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project No. 2 (Criterion Collection) blu-ray Established by Martin Scorsese in 2007, the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project has maintained a passionate commitment to preserving and presenting masterpieces from around the globe, with a growing roster of more than two dozen restorations that have introduced moviegoers to often-overlooked areas of cinema history. This collector’s set gathers six important works, from the Philippines (Insiang), Thailand (Mysterious Object at Noon), Soviet Kazakhstan (Revenge), Brazil (Limite), Turkey (Law of the Border), and Taiwan (Taipei Story). Each title is an essential contribution to the art form and a window onto a filmmaking tradition that international audiences previously had limited opportunities to experience. DUAL-FORMAT BLU-RAY AND DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 2K, 3K, or 4K digital restorations of all six films, presented courtesy of the World Cinema Project in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-rays Remastered digital soundtrack of Limite created almost entirely from archival recordings of the same musical performances director Mário Peixote and his musical arranger Brutus Pedreira originally selected to accompany the film, presented in uncompressed monaural sound on the Blu-ray New introductions to the films by World Cinema Project founder Martin Scorsese New interview programs featuring film historian Pierre Rissient (on Insiang), director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (on Mysterious Object at Noon), director Ermek Shinarbaev (on Revenge), filmmaker Walter Salles (on Limite), producer Mevlüt Akkaya (on Law of the Border), and actor and cowriter Hou Hsiao-hsien with filmmaker Edmond Wong (on Taipei Story) Updated English subtitle translations Three Blu-rays and six DVDs, with all content available in both formats PLUS: A booklet featuring essays by Phillip Lopate, Dennis Lim, Kent Jones, Fábio Andrade, Bilge Ebiri, and Andrew Chan INSIANG - Jealousy and violence take center stage in the sweltering, claustrophobic melodrama Insiang, a beautifully acted and tautly constructed character study set in the slums of Manila. Director Lino Brocka crafts an eviscerating portrait of women scorned, led by Filipina stars Hilda Koronel and Mona Lisa, who portray an innocent daughter and her bitter mother. Insiang (Koronel) leads a quiet life dominated by household duties, but after she is raped by her mother’s brutish lover and abandoned by the young man who claims to care for her, she exacts vicious revenge. A savage commentary on the degradation of urban social conditions under modern capitalism, Insiang introduced Filipino cinema to international audiences by being the first film from the country ever to play at Cannes. MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON - As a recent film-school graduate, Apichatpong Weerasethakul brought an appetite for experimentation to Thai cinema with this debut feature, an uncategorizable work that refracts documentary impressions of the director’s native country through the concept of the exquisite corpse game. Enlisting locals to contribute their own improvised narration to a simple tale, Apichatpong charts the collective construction of the fiction as each new encounter imbues it with unpredictable shades of fantasy and pathos. Shot over the course of two years in 16 mm black and white, this playful investigation of the art of storytelling established the fascination with the porous boundaries between the real and the imagined that the director has continued to explore. REVENGE - Early in the twentieth century, a child is raised in Korea with a single purpose: to avenge the death of his father’s first child. This is the crux of Revenge, a decades-spanning tale of obsession and violence, and the third collaboration between director Ermek Shinarbaev and writer Anatoli Kim. As much about Eastern philosophy and poetry as it is about everyday acts of evil, this haunting allegory was the first Soviet film to look at the Korean diaspora in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, and a founding work of the Kazakh New Wave. Rigorous and psychologically complex, Revenge weaves together luminous color imagery and inventive narrative elements in its unforgettable meditation on the way trauma can be passed down through generations. LIMITE - An astonishing work of creative expression, Limite is the sole feature by the Brazilian filmmaker and author Mário Peixoto, made when he was just twenty-two years old. Inspired by a haunting André Kertész photograph Peixoto saw on the cover of a French magazine, this avant-garde silent masterpiece centers on a man and two women lost at sea, their pasts unfolding through meticulously orchestrated flashbacks propelled by the music of Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, and others. One of the earliest works of independent Latin American filmmaking, Limite was for most of the twentieth century famously difficult to see. It is a pioneering achievement of Brazilian cinema that continues to captivate with its timeless visual poetry. LAW OF THE BORDER - Set along the Turkish-Syrian frontier, this terse, elemental tale of smugglers contending with a changing social landscape brought together two giants of Turkish cinema. Director Lütfi Ö. Akad had already made some of his country’s most notable films when he was approached by Yilmaz Güney—a rising action star who would become Turkey’s most important and controversial filmmaker—to collaborate on this neo-western about a quiet man who finds himself pitted against his fellow outlaws. Combining documentary authenticity with a tough, lean poetry, Law of the Border transformed the nation’s cinema forever—even though it was virtually impossible to see for many years. TAIPEI STORY - Edward Yang’s second feature is a mournful anatomy of a city caught between the past and the present. Made in collaboration with Yang’s fellow New Taiwan Cinema master Hou Hsiao-hsien, who cowrote the screenplay and helped finance the project, Taipei Story chronicles the growing estrangement between a washed-up baseball player (Hou, in a rare on-screen performance) working in his family’s textile business and his girlfriend (pop star Tsai Chin), who clings to the upward mobility of her career in property development. As the couple’s dreams of marriage and emigration begin to unravel, Yang’s gaze illuminates the precariousness of domestic life and the desperation of Taiwan’s globalized modernity. Description
Celebrated celluloid creeper John Carradine (Bluebeard, The Black Sleep) strikes again in this undead classic made at the height of WWII. Monogram Pictures revamps the plot of it's earlier hit, 1941's King of the Zombies, as Scott Warrington (Mauritz Hugo) returns to his childhood home in the Louisiana bayou after learning that his deceased sister, Lila (Veda Ann Borg), may have been poisoned. He is shocked to discover that Lila's husband, Dr. Von Altermann (Carradine), is secretly a Nazi madman who has been perfecting a way to turn the dead, including Lila, into an army of zombies who will serve Hitler! Simultaneously spine-chilling and rib-tickling, Revenge of the Zombies was the first movie to presume the audience knows what a 'zombie' is and not provide an explanation (The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia). With Gale Storm, Robert Lowery, Mantan Moreland, Bob Steele and James Baskett; directed by cult-movie maven Steve Sekely (The Day of the Triffids).

Did European aristocrat Claus von Bulow (Jeremy Irons) try to murder his wife, Sunny (Glenn Close), at their luxurious Newport mansion in 1980? Tabloids of the day had their opinions. "You have one thing in your favor," defense attorney Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) told von Bulow. "Everybody hates you." Written for the screen by Nicholas Kazan (Fallen, At Close Range), directed by Barbet Schroeder (Single White Female) and based on Dershowitz's book, Reversal of Fortune is the acclaimed filmization of events that had all of America talking. For his precise portrait of icy brittleness, Irons won the Best Actor Academy Award * as well as the Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics Awards. Think you know the truth? Until you watch you have no idea.

Description
Robert Alda stars alongside musical greats Al Jolson, Paul Whiteman, and Oscar Levant in this lavish fictionalized biography of composer George Gershwin. The film traces Gershwin's rise from a song plugger for a Manhattan music publishing company to the heights of international fame and fortune. Gershwin's first big hit is Swanee, introduced on Broadway by Al Jolson (playing himself). In collaboration with his lyricist brother, Ira (Herbert Rudley), George pens hit after hit in show after show. But George's kindly old music teacher wants his prize pupil to aspire to something more artistic. Gershwin responds with Rhapsody in Blue, which debuts at Aeolian Hall in 1924 under the baton of bandleader Paul Whiteman (also playing himself). As his fame and workload grows, George finds he has no time at all for romance; the two ladies in his life both eventually realize that they'll always have to play second fiddle to Gershwin's muse. Newly remastered from 4K scans of nitrate materials, this new Blu-ray disc restores over 12 minutes of footage never before seen by the general public, and also includes the outstanding overture of Gershwin melodies which only accompanied the film during its New York and Hollywood premiere engagements.

Description
This collection includes three 1950s classic Westerns starring the great Audie Murphy. THE DUEL AT SILVER CREEK (1952) From Don Siegel, the legendary director of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Lineup, Two Mules for Sister Sara, Dirty Harry, Charley Varrick and The Shootist, comes this two-fisted, action-packed western, starring celebrated war hero turned movie star Audie Murphy (Night Passage). Stephen McNally (Woman in Hiding) is Lightning Tyrone, the quick-drawing marshal of Silver City who’s intent on capturing a ruthless gang of claim jumpers that have been terrorizing and murdering local miners—including his best friend. After losing the use of his famed trigger finger in a shootout, Lightning deputizes the sharp-shooting Silver Kid (Murphy), whose own father was killed by the gang, to help bring the outlaws to justice. But their plans are complicated when Lightning falls for the beautiful new lady in town (Faith Domergue, This Island Earth), whose interest in the marshal is a thin disguise for her own dangerous agenda. This unforgettable adventure, brimming with pulse-pounding thrills, danger-tinged romance and gun-blazing glory, co-stars Susan Cabot (Son of Ali Baba) and screen great Lee Marvin (Prime Cut) in one of his first screen appearances. RIDE A CROOKED TRAIL (1958) In a refreshing change-of-pace role, Audie Murphy (No Name on the Bullet) plays Joe Maybe, an outlaw who assumes a U.S. Marshal’s identity and is appointed sheriff of Webb City, a rough river town, after local lawmaker Judge Kyle (Walter Matthau, Charley Varrick) takes a shine to him. The only reason Maybe goes along with the ruse is to gain easy access to the town bank and plan a robbery. This scheme goes dangerously awry when Tessa (Gia Scala, The Price of Fear), a former flame from New Orleans, shows up in town and is persuaded to pose as his wife. The couple’s masquerade is further complicated by the arrival of Sam Teeler (Henry Silva, Code of Silence), Maybe’s rival in crime, who plans to rob the bank with his own gang of outlaws. A fast-paced action-adventure full of unexpected plot twists, Ride a Crooked Trail also displays a surprisingly light comic flair which is capped by Walter Matthau’s delightful, rambunctious performance as the wily Judge Kyle. Directed by Jesse Hibbs (To Hell and Back) and written by the great Borden Chase (Red River, Winchester ’73, Backlash). NO NAME ON THE BULLET (1959) From Jack Arnold, the acclaimed director of It Came from Outer Space, The Glass Web, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Incredible Shrinking Man and Man in the Shadow, comes this thrilling and suspenseful western starring World War II hero turned movie star Audie Murphy (The Duel at Silver Creek) as a “good” bad guy in a tense tale of retribution. When hired killer John Gant (Murphy) rides into town, no one is sure whose name is on his bullet. Several townsfolk, knowing they have enemies, each believe that the professional assassin is there to kill them. While they wait for him to make his move, paranoia starts taking over in this exciting story of payback on the wide-open plains. Beautifully shot in CinemaScope by Harold Lipstein (Ride a Crooked Trail, Pillars of the Sky) and featuring a stellar cast that includes Charles Drake (The Price of Fear), Joan Evans (A Strange Adventure), Virginia Grey (Strangers in the Night), Warren Stevens (40 Pounds of Trouble), R.G. Armstrong (White Lightning), Willis Bouchey (Panic in Year Zero), Whit Bissell (Not as a Stranger), Edgar Stehli (4D Man) and Jerry Paris (Marty). Special Features: -NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Toby Roan (The Duel at Silver Creek) -NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Toby Roan (Ride a Crooked Trail) -NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians/Filmmakers Steve Mitchell and Gary Gerani -Theatrical Trailers -Optional English Subtitles

Description
In this brilliant, moving film directed by Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch), cowboy icons Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea find roles to match their leathery Western personas, playing aging lawmen hired to guard a gold shipment. They don’t have much: a horse each, a couple of dollars. And they have everything: their independence. But the frontier is disappearing – and so is space wide open enough for independent men. With luck, the two will find space enough for this ride and one last payday. They will also find adventure, including the dramatic rescue of a mistreated bride (Mariette Hartley), gun-blazing shoot-outs and a life-changing betrayal. Both an exciting Western and a heart-lifting homage to the genre, Ride the High Country is a journey into film greatness.

Hollywood actor turned idiosyncratic auteur Robert Montgomery (Here Comes Mr. Jordan) directs and stars in this striking crime drama based on a novel by Dorothy B. Hughes. He plays a tough-talking former GI who comes to a small New Mexico town to shake down a gangster who killed his best friend; things quickly turn nasty. Ride the Pink Horse features standout supporting performances from Fred Clark, Wanda Hendrix, and especially Thomas Gomez, who became the first Hispanic actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for his role here. With it's relentless pace, expressive cinematography by the great Russell Metty (All That Heaven Allows), and punchy, clever script by Charles Lederer (His Girl Friday) and Ben Hecht (Spellbound), this is an overlooked treasure from the heyday of 1940s film noir.

From René Clément, the legendary director of Forbidden Games, Purple Noon, The Deadly Trap and And Hope to Die comes this stylish thriller starring screen legend Charles Bronson (Chino, Cold Sweat, Mr. Majestyk). When a beautiful young woman (Marlène Jobert, We Won’t Grow Old Together) in the South of France is stalked and then assaulted by a mysterious masked assailant, she kills the man in self-defense, and in a moment of misjudgment, she dumps his corpse over a cliff into the sea instead of calling the police. Trying to return to her life before the attack, her world is turned upside down when an American investigator (Bronson) shows up and, to her horror, seems to know everything about what she has done. Rider on the Rain showcases fine performances both from Bronson, whose mix of sympathy and aggression perfectly defines his character, and Jobert, who gains audience empathy with her touch of sexuality mixed with an innate, almost childlike innocence. Featuring a haunting and beautiful score by Francis Lai (Love Story) with wonderful supporting performances by Gabriele Tinti (Cannon for Cordoba) and Jill Ireland (Breakheart Pass). This special edition includes both the 114-minute U.S. cut and the 118-minute French cut. Special Features: -NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Description
Cinema devotee Mort Rifkin (Wallace Shawn) accompanies his publicist wife Sue (Gina Gershon) to the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, worried that her fascination with her young film director client, Philippe (Louis Garrel), might be more than professional. In addition, Mort hopes the change of scenery will provide a respite from his struggle to write a first novel that lives up to his impossibly exacting standards. Turned off by the lavish praise showered on Philippe’s film, which he considers banal, Mort becomes preoccupied with the cinema classics he once taught as a professor, by masters like Bergman, Fellini, Godard, Truffaut, and Buñuel. Mort’s relentlessly dismissive opinions of Philippe, Sue’s current focus as a professional and someone she greatly admires, strains their already frayed relationship. Mort’s mood lightens when he meets Jo Rojas (Elena Anaya), a kindred spirit whose marriage to tempestuous painter Paco (Sergi López) is also causing her pain. While Mort’s personal tastes have sometimes pushed people away, Jo’s intellect and shared sensibility draw them closer together. While Sue spends her days with Philippe, Mort’s relationship with Jo deepens and he rekindles his love for classic films. Reflecting on the events of his life through the prism of those great movies, Mort finds renewed hope for his future. Filled with absurdist humor, Woody Allen’s RIFKIN’S FESTIVAL blends unreal situations with interwoven tales of romance and heartache to create a loving tribute to the transformative power of film. n/a

Description
A brooding occult horror with echoes of Bergman and Pasolini, The Righteous insinuates its way beneath the skin by way of an intelligent script, taut direction, and strong performances. Writer and actor Mark O'Brien (Ready or Not) pulls no punches as he confronts grief, guilt, faith and atonement in his remarkable directorial debut. A former priest, Frederic Mason (Henry Czerny), anguished by the tragic death of his young daughter, finds himself wrestling with his religious convictions when a mysterious young man (Mark O’Brien) appears wounded on his doorstop in need of assistance. After he and his wife Ethel (Mimi Kuzyk) welcome him across the threshold and into their household, Frederic sees an opportunity for redemption in this mysterious and troubled lost soul, who might just be an emissary from God, or maybe the Devil... Set amongst the bleak and forbidding landscapes of Newfoundland, crisply captured in tenebrous monochrome by cinematographer Scott McClellan, and featuring robust performances from all its cast members, The Righteous is a sombre supernatural chiller that builds to a memorable crescendo, and signals the emergence of a major new filmmaking talent. Description
Product Description Righteous Kill pairs two cinematic icons whose previous screen collaboration, Michael Mann's 1995 Heat, was absolutely electrifying despite minimal time together in a long movie. Now in their mid-60s, De Niro and Pacino are playing veteran cops who, despite being grizzled, should look much younger than these actors. The incongruent casting makes the dark story improbable from the get-go, and things get worse as dialogue by screenwriter Russell Gurwitz quickly sounds like a parody of vintage cop movie cliches. It's a strain to find anything that works. The two leads play longtime detectives and partners whose weariness with rapists, murderers, pedophiles and other villains appears linked to the acts of a serial killer taking out bad guys who got away with heinous crimes. A videotape confession by De Niro's tightly-coiled Turk--who has been seeking the killer with Pacino's Rooster--would seem to establish his ties to the events. But the movie isn't over until it's over, assuming one is still with the movie after plodding along with its facsimile of noir conviction. Director Jon Avnet never gets a handle on Righteous Kill's gritty heart, superficially pushing suspense along with heavy-handed editing, and adding unpersuasive sauce in the form of Turk's somewhat S&M sexual relationship with a female cop (Carla Gugino). Giving the proceedings sort of a boost are Donnie Wahlberg and John Leguizamo as a younger pair of sleuths working the same case. This could easily have been a better movie with those two in the leads.
