One of the most eccentric comedies of the 1980s, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a pop-culture touchstone that helped make a manic oddball named Pee-wee Herman—the creation and alter ego of actor-comedian Paul Reubens—into an icon for outsiders of all ages. It also established the distinctive style of director Tim Burton, whose eye-popping visual sense is already on full display in this, his first feature film. Following the gleefully irreverent Pee-wee as he embarks on a road trip to recover his beloved stolen bicycle, the movie unfolds with the antic invention of a live-action cartoon, combining a gallery of memorably wacky characters, colorful, kitschy Americana, and surreal flights of fancy into a joyously uninhibited paean to creativity and the spirit of childhood. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Tim Burton, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack Alternate 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack Audio commentary by Burton and actor-cowriter Paul Reubens Audio commentary by composer Danny Elfman (over a music-only soundtrack to the film) New interview with Burton and actor-filmmaker Richard Ayoade New interviews with producer Richard Abramson, production designer David L. People on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag) represents an astonishing confluence of talent—an early collaboration by a group of German filmmakers who would all go on to become major Hollywood players, including eventual noir masters Robert Siodmak (The Killers, Criss Cross) and Edgar G. Ulmer (Detour, Bluebeard) and future Oscar winners Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard, Ace in the Hole) and Fred Zinneman (High Noon, A Man for All Seasons). This effervescent, sunlit silent film, about a handful of city dwellers enjoying a weekend outing (a charming cast of nonprofessionals), offers a rare glimpse of Weimar-era Berlin. A unique hybrid of documentary and fictional storytelling, People on Sunday was both an experiment and a mainstream hit that would influence generations of film artists around the world.

A loving snapshot of a vanished New York, director Ira Sachs’s captivating cultural time capsule is a warm, witty, graceful re-creation of a real-life conversation that took place between photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) and writer Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall) in 1974. Peter Hujar’s Day eavesdrops on the two friends’ leisurely, affectionate hangout as Hujar recounts his previous day’s activities, offering insights into both his art and his everyday life. With this furiously witty comedy of manners, Katharine Hepburn revitalized her career and cemented her status as the era's most iconic leading lady thanks in great part to her own shrewd orchestrations. While starring in the Philip Barry stage play 'The Philadelphia Story', Hepburn snapped up the screen rights, handpicking her friend George Cukor to direct. The intoxicating screenplay by Donald Ogden Stewart pits the formidable Philadelphia socialite Tracy Lord (Hepburn, at her most luminous) against various romantic foils, chief among them her charismatic ex-husband (Cary Grant), who disrupts her imminent marriage by paying her family estate a visit, accompanied by a tabloid reporter on assignment to cover the wedding of the year (James Stewart, in his only Academy Award winning performance). A fast-talking screwball comedy as well as a tale of regrets and reconciliation, this convergence of golden-age talent is one of the greatest American films of all time. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES - New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack - Audio commentary from 2005 featuring film scholar Jeanine Basinger - New introduction to actor Katharine Hepburn s role in the development of the film by documentarians David Heeley and Joan Kramer - In Search of Tracy Lord, a new documentary about the origin of the character and her social milieu - Two full episodes of The Dick Cavett Show from 1973, featuring rare interviews with Hepburn, plus an excerpt of a 1978 interview from that show with director George Cukor - Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the film from 1943, featuring an introduction by filmmaker Cecil B. When the cocky three-time convict picks the pocketbook of unsuspecting Candy (Jean Peters), he finds a more spectacular haul than he could have imagined: a strip of microfilm bearing confidential U.S. information. This sensual and striking chronicle of a disappearance and its aftermath put director Peter Weir on the map and helped usher in a new era of Australian cinema. Based on an acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set at the turn of the twentieth century and concerns a small group of students from an all-female college who vanish, along with a chaperone, while on a St. Valentine’s Day outing. Less a mystery than a journey into the mystic, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society, Weir’s gorgeous, disquieting film is a work of poetic horror whose secrets haunt viewers to this day. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Peter Weir and director of photography Russell Boyd, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Interview with Weir Program on the making of the film, featuring interviews with executive producer Patricia Lovell, producers Hal McElroy and Jim McElroy, and cast members Introduction by film scholar David Thomson, author of The New Biographical Dictionary of Film On-set documentary hosted by Lovell and featuring interviews with Weir, actor Rachel Roberts, and source-novel author Joan Lindsay Homesdale (1971), a black comedy by Weir Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by author Megan Abbott and an excerpt from film scholar Marek Haltof’s 1996 book Peter Weir: When Cultures Collide

A French comedy master whose films went unseen for decades as a result of legal tangles, director-actor Pierre Etaix is a treasure the cinematic world has rediscovered and taken up with relish. His work can be placed in the spectrum of classic physical comedy with that of Jacques Tati and Jerry Lewis, but it also stands alone. These films, influenced by Etaix's experiences as a circus acrobat and clown and by the silent film comedies he adored, are elegantly deadpan, but as an on-screen presence, Etaix radiates warmth. This collection includes all of his films, including five features, The Suitor (1962), Yoyo (1965), As Long as You've Got Your Health (1966), Le grand amour (1969), and Land of Milk and Honey (1971)—most of them collaborations with the great screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie)—and three shorts, Rupture (1961), the Oscar-winning Happy Anniversary (1962), and Feeling Good (1966). Not one of these is anything less than a bracing and witty delight.

Dissatisfied in marriage and life, Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) takes to the road with the babysitter, his ex-lover Marianne Renoir (Anna Karina), and leaves the bourgeois world behind. Yet this is no normal road trip: the tenth feature in six years by genius auteur Jean-Luc Godard is a stylish mash-up of anticonsumerist satire, au courant politics, and comic-book aesthetics, as well as a violent, zigzag tale of, as Godard called them, “the last romantic couple.” With blissful color imagery by cinematographer Raoul Coutard and Belmondo and Karina at their most animated, Pierrot le fou is one of the high points of the French New Wave, and was Godard’s last frolic before he moved ever further into radical cinema. The boundless imagination and physical marvels of the work of the German modern-dance pioneer Pina Bausch leap off the screen in this exuberant tribute by Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire). A long-planned film collaboration between the director and the choreographer was in preproduction when Bausch died in 2009. Two years later, Wenders decided to go ahead with the project, reconceiving it as an homage to his late friend. The result, shot in stunning 3D, is a remarkable visual experience and a vivid representation of Bausch’s art, enacted by a group of staggeringly talented dancers from her company, the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Pina is an adventurous work of cinema that highlights the bold legacy of one of the world’s true creative visionaries.

John Waters made bad taste perversely transcendent with the forever shocking counterculture sensation Pink Flamingos, his most infamous and daring cinematic transgression. Outré diva Divine is iconic as the wanted criminal hiding out with her family of degenerates in a trailer outside Baltimore while reveling in her tabloid notoriety as the “Filthiest Person Alive.” When a pair of sociopaths (Mink Stole and David Lochary) with a habit of kidnapping women in order to impregnate them attempt to challenge her title, Divine resolves to show them and the world the true meaning of the word filthy. Incest, cannibalism, shrimping, and film history’s most legendary gross-out ending—Waters and his merry band of Dreamlanders leave no taboo unsmashed in this gleefully subversive ode to outsiderhood, in which camp spectacle and pitch-black satire are wielded in an all-out assault on respectability. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director John Waters, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack Two audio commentaries featuring Waters, from the 1997 Criterion laserdisc and the 2001 DVD release New conversation between Waters and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch Tour of the film’s Baltimore locations, led by Waters Deleted scenes, alternate takes, and on-set footage Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing And more! Finding immediate fame in the opening title sequence of Blake Edwards 1964 classic comedy The Pink Panther, the feline embodiment of the Swinging Sixties cool quickly become the star of his own animated shorts produced by the DePatie-Frelend Studio. Unlike the loud and manic characters of other animation studios, the Pink Panther was lithe and easygoing, and moved to the rhythm of jazzy theme music of the great Henry Mancini (Breakfast at Tiffany's). Usually thwarting the plans of a variety of uptight little men, the hep cat's fresh approach to cartoon comedy earned an Academy Award for his first solo effort: The Pink Phink (Best Animated Short Film, 1964) and remains the era's most iconic animation sensation. This collection of 20 cartoons are all mastered in HD and feature the original audio without laugh-tracks which were added to the television versions of the short films. Special Features: Audio commentaries for selected films, by author Mark Arnold, historian Jerry Beck, filmmaker Greg Ford, cartoon writer William Hohauser and veteran DePatie-Freleng storyman Bob Kurtz - Interspersed throughout find archival sound-bites from animation pioneer and DePatie-Freleng Enterprises co-founder, Friz Freleng himself.

Description

In this collection of twenty animated theatrical shorts, the Pink Panther firmly hits his stride, the character’s persona first established and refined in his previous twenty films. The Pink Panther of 1966-1968 is just reaching his prime, one blithe cat maintaining his cool in the face of an uptight society, often personified by the stress-wracked “Little Man.” Here, as always, are pop-culture parodies (the still-timely superhero spoof Super Pink), satires of ’60s counterculture (Psychedelic Pink), and flirtations with outright surrealism (The Hand Is Pinker Than the Eye, Pink Outs). With production supervised by animation legend Friz Freleng, and direction largely handled by the Panther’s original graphic designer Hawley Pratt, these shorts blend classic cartoon slapstick with a more modern sensibility that make them favorites with audiences of all ages. Special Features: -20 shorts in chronological order (21-40) - All with original audio (no laugh tracks) -Audio commentaries for selected films by author Mark Arnold, historian Jerry Beck, filmmaker Greg Ford, cartoon writer William Hohauser, and veteran DePatie-Freleng storymen Tony Benedict and Art Leonardi -Pink Outs (TV Version) -From Page to Screen - In the Pink (5:26) -From Page to Screen - The Pink Blueprint (6:22) -Reversible Blu-ray art

This collection includes 22 Pink Panther cartoon from 1968 to 1969 - By the end of the 1960s, The Pink Panther had achieved the status of iconic cartoon character, and the cosmopolitan cat left his big-city habitat and began crossing into more universal comedy settings: a military base (G.I. Pink), caveman times (Prehistoric Pink and Extinct Pink) and Olde England (Pink Valiant and Pinkcome Tax). But the panther never completely changed his stripes. In color-splashed urban landscapes (a hallmark of the DePatie-Freleng studios), the sublime feline continued to engage in duels of wits—with the establishment “Little Man” as well as the occasional inanimate object (a cuckoo clock in In The Pink of the Night). Special Features: -22 shorts in chronological order (41-62) - All with original audio (no laugh tracks) -Audio commentaries for selected films, by author Mark Arnold, historian Jerry Beck, filmmaker Greg Ford, cartoon writer William Hohauser and animator Mike Kazaleh -Behind the Feline: The Cartoon Phenomenon (10:49) -Reversible Art

In this next-to-last phase of the Pink Panther's amazing run of new theatrical short-subjects, newsworthy mid-to-late 1970s trends and fads such as Rock'em-Sock'em robots (PINK ARCADE), compulsive dieting (DIETETIC PINK), and the merchandizing of "pet rocks" (Art Leonardi's ROCKY PINK) come into focus. Fairy-tale spoofs (PINK PIPER, CAT AND THE BEANSTALK) make a modest comeback, but much more impressive are brand-new wrinkles on familiar Panther themes like sleep deprivation (Art Davis's PINK TRUMPET), wars against a pesky fly (turning positively apocalyptic in Sid Marcus's PINK S.W.A.T.) and journeys through surreality (SHERLOCK PINK, Robert McKimson's last and probably best "Panther" pic). Product Description Disney and Pixar present an incredible new collection of 12 short films, featuring multiple Academy Award(R) nominees (Best Short Film, Animated: "Presto," 2008; "Day & Night," 2010; "La Luna," 2011) and a host of family favorites. Join the celebration of imagination with this must-own collection, packed with unforgettable animation, fantastic stories and captivating characters. Plus, enjoy all-new extras that share how Pixar's storied talent got their start -- including student films from acclaimed directors John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter! Amazon.com The artists at the Pixar Studio used their early short films the way Walt Disney's artists used the "Silly Symphonies": to explore the medium of animation and to hone their skills in preparation for their first features, Toy Story and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, respectively. Today, Pixar is the most successful animation studio in the world and they continue to test ideas, techniques, technologies, and artists in short films. "Day & Night," Teddy Newton's clever study of two characters who look alike but act differently, and "Presto," Doug Sweetland's slapstick duel between a fussy magician and his recalcitrant rabbit, recall the great Warner Bros. and MGM cartoons of the '40s and '50s. In contrast, a gentle nostalgia pervades Enrico Casarosa's charming "La Luna," the story of a small boy finding his own way of performing a magical job. All three films earned Oscar nominations. Other shorts bring back characters the artists still enjoy animating: Remy from Ratatouille, Dug from Up, Mater from Cars, and the whole Toy Story gang. The tone and the look of the films vary widely, but they all exhibit a palpable delight in the art of animation and a desire to push the medium in new directions. The bonus features include student films by Oscar-winning directors John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter. It's fun to look for the roots of the great Pixar films in these early works: the turquoise and purple monster in Stanton's "A Story" looks a bit like Sully in Monsters, Inc.; the little boy's room in Lasseter's "Nitemare" anticipates Andy's room in Toy Story. This delightful collection is an all-too-rare family entertainment that an entire family can actually enjoy together. (Rated G: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon (Your Friend the Rat, Presto, Burn-E, Partly Cloudy, Dug's Special Mission, George & A. J., Day & Night, Hawaiian Vacation, Air Mater, Small Fry, Time Travel Mater, La Luna)
