Description

Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Before directing the legendary PENITENTIARY trilogy, Jamaa Fanaka helmed these two offbeat genre films, which helped catapult him to recognition as one of the most important black filmmakers working in 70s independent cinema. In Fanaka's debut feature, WELCOME HOME BROTHER CHARLES, a young black man is sent to prison, after being brutalized by a corrupt racist cop. Upon release, he takes deadly revenge against the cops, lawyers, and thugs who got him busted, using a most unusual weapon... As much a parody of exploitation films as it is a proud piece of genre cinema, BROTHER CHARLES combines horror and blaxploitation tropes with stirring social subtext resulting in a drive-in movie unlike any other. Fanaka's second feature, EMMA MAE, tells the story of a naive young woman who moves from the Deep South to Watts. Initially finding herself at odds with her surroundings, Emma eventually gains acceptance from a local drug addict and dealer. But when he's arrested and jailed, she plans a daring bank robbery to bail him out... Featuring a cast of mostly non-professionals and shot entirely on location in Watts, this uniquely subversive action film is an insider's view of black, working-class LA neighborhoods. Vinegar Syndrome brings these two landmark films to Blu-ray, newly restored from their original camera negatives. Bonus Features: 1. Newly scanned and restored in 2k from 35mm original negatives 2. "The History of the L.A. Rebellion & Jamaa Fanaka" - an appreciation by Jan-Christopher Horak, Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive 3. Post film Q&A with actress Jerri Hayes from a 2017 screening of EMMA MAE at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn, NY 4. Original theatrical trailer 5. Multiple original teaser trailers 6. Reversible cover artwork 7. English SDH subtitles

They are rugged pioneers and brave trailblazers who tame the wild west. These are the women of the great frontier – that’s right – the women! Based on historical record, this wagon-train saga details a 2,000-mile journey from Chicago to California. The men seek gold; the women seek matrimony. Both strike pay dirt! Buck Wyatt (Robert Taylor) is a tough, experienced scout who leads a wagon train comprised of two ex-showgirls (Denise Darcel and Julie Bishop), a hearty widow (Beverly Dennis) and fifteen men who act as guides. When one of the men disobeys Buck’s orders not to fraternize with the ladies, Buck shoots him, causing the others to desert. Instead of turning back, the determined women insist on going on, learning to ride, shoot, and drive mules. Although treacherous terrain and a deadly ambush lay ahead, these tough ladies are filled with the American frontier spirit, and nothing will stop them! Based on a story by Frank Capra, and directed by signature gusto by the masterful William Wellman, Westward the Women is a cinematic masterpiece.

Lifelong ranch hand Ross Bodine decides cowpunching is no kind of life. So he and a raw cowboy half his age rob a bank to get the cash each needs to improve his lot. An indignant posse is soon in pursuit. Filmmaker Blake Edwards made his name with The Pink Panther and other comedies, but he also showed great skill in other genres with the thriller Experiment in Terror, the drama Days of Wine and Roses and this nuanced paean to the West. In performances perfectly matching Edwards' balance of rowdy comedy and hardscrabble period realism, William Holden and Ryan O'Neal play the fugitive saddlebums, with Holden drawing special praise. "As he grows older, he grows better like a great old wine. All the reverberations from the previous roles are beginning to sound" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times).

Description

Independently produced in 1948 under the aegis of the U.S. Navy Club, Will It Happen Again? (The Love Life of Adolph Hitler) is a carefully calculated and beautifully executed takedown of the Third Reich. Footage from Nazi propaganda films (including Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will) is counteracted with images from Nuremberg trials and the liberated death camps, puncturing the myth of the Aryan Herrenmensch, revealing the NSDAP leadership to have been little more than the typical autocrats, drunk on power, frolicking in banal luxury, and enjoying their brief moment of invincibility. Notorious exploitation producer Dwain Esper (Narcotic, Maniac) acquired the film in 1972 and reshaped the judicious anti-fascist treatise into a frothing attack on all 20th-century despots, including Joseph Stalin. In addition to more bombastic narration, Conform Or Die (aka Hitler's Strange Love Life) is ladled with unhealthy amounts of shocking footage (e.g. the mutilated corpse of Benito Mussolini) to hammer home its anti-authoritarian message. Viewer discretion is most definitely advised. This Kino Classics edition was mastered in 2K and 4K from the original 35mm negatives and several 35mm prints, compiling the most complete versions of these controversial but undeniably powerful anti-Nazi propaganda films. Special Features: • Audio Commentary by Film Historian Anthony Slide • Alternate "Stalin" Ending • Conform or Die (1973, aka Hitler's Strange Love Life), a More Graphically Explicit Version Re-edited by Exploitation Filmmaker Dwain Esper Top Similar From the Brand Questions Reviews Will it Happen Again? - Blu-ray Will it Happen Again? - Blu-ray
