Product Description Arbelos Films presents LIFE IS CHEAP … BUT TOILET PAPER IS EXPENSIVE - New digital restoration of Director Wayne Wang's definitive cut of this much-loved independent film. Exploding a seemingly simple premise - a nameless "cowboy" courier (Spencer Nakasako) arrives in pre-Handover Hong Kong to deliver a mysterious briefcase to a mercurial Mob boss whilst becoming entangled with his femme fatale mistress (Cora Miao) - independent filmmaking legend Wayne Wang's LIFE IS CHEAP … BUT TOILET PAPER IS EXPENSIVE barrels through inspired genre deconstruction, guerrilla docu-fiction and fierce political jeremiad, all with a keen sense of humor and deeply rich visual palette. Tracking the Man-with-no-name's increasingly byzantine mission across every level of the city's social strata, we're introduced to fortune families, cabdrivers, hustlers, butchers and more, each punctuating the high-octane Neo-noir narrative with instantly memorable monologues that capture a now-distant era in Hong Kong history. Multifaceted but never incoherent LIFE IS CHEAP … BUT TOILET PAPER IS EXPENSIVE is among Wang's most unique and bracing contributions to the independent film cannon. Much-loved on the international film festival circuit but unjustly overlooked in North America, this is a maverick tour de force ripe for rediscovery. Specs: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.66:1. DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono. Region code: A. Special Features: New 4K restoration of Wayne Wang's final cut by Lightbox Film Center at University of the Arts in collaboration with University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. New video interview with Wayne Wang. New video interview with Wayne Wang and co-writer/co-director Spencer Nakasako. Original chase sequence. U.S. Theatrical Trailer. New essay by Aliza Ma. Review Director Wayne Wang's versatility has never failed to impress. --Matt Zoller Seitz, Rogerebert.com (I)ncredibly unique ― and a reminder of how gloriously unhinged late 20th-century independent cinema could be. --Lee Jutton, Film Inquiry Wayne Wang's Hong Kong Noir Dazzles In New Director's Cut & Restoration. --Kyle Turner, Playlist Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews Life is Cheap But Toilet Paper is Expensive

Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! Hal Roach's Our Gang series is one of the longest running and most prolific in the field of short subjects with 220 one- and two-reel comedies released between 1922 and 1944. The secret to the longevity of the series, as well as its appeal to generations long after its conclusion, is mainly due to Roach’s choice to cast kids who came across as “natural” on the screen—scruffy underdogs that moviegoers could identify with or wish they could be—not glossy “showbiz professionals”. After producing 88 silent Our Gang shorts, Roach transitioned to sound releasing 80 “talkies” in the series starting with Small Talk in 1929. It took time to fine-tune the adjustment from silent to sound, but soon the studio began firing on all cylinders producing classics like Shivering Shakespeare and The First Seven Years (both 1930). The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 1 contains the first 11 Our Gang sound shorts produced by Roach at the dawn of the “talkie era": Small Talk to A Tough Winter—with each short newly scanned and restored from original Hal Roach 35mm film elements. A must-have for any true Our Gang fan, Volume 1 features the talents of Jackie Cooper, Allen “Farina” Hoskins, Mary Ann Jackson, Bobby “Wheezer" Hutchins, Joe Cobb, Harry Spear and Norman “Chubby" Chaney. SHORTS 1929 : * Small Talk * Railroadin' * Lazy Days * Boxing Gloves * Bouncing Babies * Moan & Groan, Inc. 1930: * Shivering Shakespeare * The First Seven Years * When the Wind Blows * Bear Shooters * A Tough Winter

Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! In Hollywood, the Hal Roach Studio was unofficially known as the "Lot of Fun", employing such mirthmakers as Laurel & Hardy and Charley Chase. But many of the company's most popular comedy shorts starred an aggregation collectively known as "Our Gang", a series whose premise was captivatingly simple: showcase a motley group of scruffy but lovable kids whose antics were easily identifiable to moviegoing audiences. The series, later re-titled "The Little Rascals" for TV syndication, got its start in 1922 during the silent era, and transitioned to sound by the end of the decade. Early "talkies" in the franchise like Teacher's Pet (1930), School's Out (1930) and Love Business (1931) would prove to be some of their finest -- all of which are included in this volume and continue to entertain subsequent generations of classic movie devotees. Remastered, uncut, and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! From 1929 to 1931, Hal Roach's “Our Gang” series showcasing scruffy but lovable kids was among the studio's biggest successes in the new era of sound. But in 1932, the franchise would introduce one of the most beloved and durable members of the gang in George ""Spanky"" McFarland—so named because of his mother's constant admonitions of ""Mustn't touch! Spanky, spanky!"" Director James Horne, having shot a reel's worth of test footage of the youngster (later recycled in Spanky [1932]), showed it to anyone and everyone on the Roach lot, and shortly afterward, ""Spanky"" made his modest debut in Free Eats (1932). But Roach, recognizing the cuteness and natural talent of McFarland, immediately promoted the three-year-old to major player status by titling the next short after the tot and using his allure for maximum mirth in classic outings like The Pooch, Hook & Ladder and Birthday Blues—all made in 1932 and all included in this set. Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! With the introduction of George "Spanky" McFarland to the troupe in 1932, the "Our Gang" comedies soon embarked on one of the series' most prolific periods of mirth making. Two years later, Hal Roach was inspired to team Spanky with a loyal sidekick: precocious child actor Scotty Beckett, whose delightful comic support of "Spank" premiered in one of Our Gang's funniest and most beloved two-reelers, Hi'-Neighbor! (1934).Spanky and Scotty often functioned as a Greek chorus to the "bigger" kids in classic outings like The First Roundup, Honky-Donkey and For Pete’s Sake (all 1934). They also displayed their broad comic range and chemistry by imitating the antics of Roach's biggest stars, Laurel & Hardy, as in Mike Fright (1934) where Scotty's guileless "Maybe we ain't us" earns him a withering Hardy-like stare from his pal.The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 4 contains the next 12 Our Gang sound shorts produced by Roach in the "talkie era": The Kid from Borneo (1932) to Shrimps for a Day (1934)—with each short newly scanned and restored from original Hal Roach 35mm film elements.A must-have for any true Our Gang fan, Volume 4 features the talents of George "Spanky" McFarland, Dickie Moore, Wally Albright, Bobby "Wheezer" Hutchins, Dorothy DeBorba, Matthew "Stymie" Beard, Tommy Bond, Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas, and, of course, Scotty Beckett. Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! With the departure of Wally Albright from ""Our Gang"" after the filming of Washee Ironee in late 1934, producer Hal Roach temporarily shifted the focus of the series back to George ""Spanky"" McFarland as he had done a year before when Dickie Moore left the ""Lot of Fun"". That all changed with the talent show-themed short Beginner’s Luck (1935) where one competitor wouldn’t win first prize... but he would soon win fame as one of the most popular ""Little Rascals"" performers in the franchise's history. The youngster making his Our Gang debut in Luck was none other than seven-year-old Carl ""Alfalfa"" Switzer, whose comical countenance—including a lard-assisted cowlick, a face smothered in freckles and a singing voice that was the dictionary definition of ""off-key""—was put to use for maximum mirthmaking in such classics as Teacher’s Beau (1935), Sprucin' Up (1935) and The Pinch Singer (1936). Alfalfa's unpleasant warbling was also a highlight of Our Gang Follies of 1936 (1935), the sho...

This star studded tribute brings into focus the dazzling, complex period of Liza Minnelli’s life starting in the 1970s, just after the tragic death of her mother Judy Garland— as she confronts a range of personal and professional challenges on the way to becoming a bona fide legend. Over these years, Liza seeks out extraordinary mentors: Kay Thompson, Fred Ebb, Charles Aznavour, Halston, and Bob Fosse. With insightful participation from a coterie of colleagues such as Michael Feinstein, Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Joel Grey and the late Chita Rivera, along with the revelatory participation by the star herself, the film illuminates the contradiction of Liza Minnelli: her privilege and struggle, strength and vulnerability, unreal expectations and towering talent – the friction of which fueled her stunning rise, resilience and her enduring place as one of the greatest, most original performers in the history of entertainment.
