Entomologist Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) was hailed as a heroine for rescuing Manhattan from a roach-borne pandemic via genetic engineering. Perhaps the applause should have been held, because rather than dying out, her designer creatures are continuing to evolve... and the largest are making hapless subway workers their prey. Guillermo Del Toro's creepy sci-fi chiller also stars Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin, Charles S. Dutton, Giancarlo Giannini. Theatrical version; 105 min./Director's cut; 111 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English DTS 5.1, DTS Lossless stereo; Subtitles: English; audio commentary by Del Toro, others; featurettes; deleted scenes; storyboards; gag reel; theatrical trailer; more. Three-disc set.
This is a great movie with a dark and creepy atmosphere that's well executed. There is a lot to like, from the claustrophobic locations to the unique storyline. Some of the secondary characters are more interesting than the main characters and the CGI is a bit dated, but it's sparse and still effective. If you're looking for a creature feature, I would definitely recommend this unless you have a strong aversion to bugs!
