I somehow never saw Drugstore Cowboy, which is exactly the kind of movie I like using 3DBR for. It's Gus Van Sant's 1989 film about Matt Dillon running a crew that robs drugstores in early-70s Portland, and I ended up really enjoying it. I usually don't go for drug movies because they lean on hallucination scenes or get cartoonish, but this one doesn't, and I appreciated that. It plays it straigh...

I'm a big Guy Ritchie fan, so this was an easy pick, and it's a pretty typical one for him. A lot of the movie is spent setting things up so you can watch how they pull it off, and that's the fun of it. The action is good and the acting is solid all around. The plot and story were just ok and could have used some work, but it was still an enjoyable rental. Picture and sound were both good for a ...

Damn, this movie was awesome. I went in with pretty low expectations, but had heard how good J.K. Simmons was in it, and he absolutely lived up to the hype. I never would have thought a movie about a conductor and a drummer could be this intense, but it’s tense almost the entire way through. Really well done and easily one of the biggest surprises I’ve watched in a while. The transfer looks real...

I didn’t have big expectations going into this one, but I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Really good performances from Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening, and the whole movie just has a fun, easygoing feel to it. It’s based on a pretty crazy true story, but never feels overdone. Just a really well-made, enjoyable movie that ended up being much better than I expected. Definitely wo...

I wanted to like The Core more than I did, but overall I thought the movie was pretty forgettable. It has a fun disaster-movie idea, but the story and characters never really pulled me in. The 4K transfer is decent, but nothing that really impressed me. The audio was probably the highlight of the disc — some really good bass, surround activity and a few scenes that actually sound pretty big. Not...

I love boutique labels, but Shout Factory can be hit or miss. This Pleasantville release is actually pretty decent. The movie still holds up, the picture looks good for a Blu-ray, and the audio is fine but nothing impressive. My biggest criticism is that some of the rules around characters turning color feel a little inconsistent — Paul Walker’s character being one example. Still, it’s an enjoya...
