Lost in Translation 01/15 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…5.0
Lost in Translation is a subtle and bittersweet movie with great performances from Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Their chemistry makes the simple story feel genuine, funny, and surprisingly moving. It captures loneliness and connection in a way that feels very natural, and the Tokyo setting gives it a distinct atmosphere.
Kung Fu Panda 4K UHD Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…5.0
Kung Fu Panda remains just as entertaining as ever, and this disc presents it in a very nice-looking upgrade. The colors, textures, fur, and details are slightly improved, but the picture is not a huge jump from the previous Blu-ray. The Atmos audio makes a bigger difference, especially during the fight scenes, fireworks, and musical moments.
Aliens 4K UHD 02/24 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.0
Aliens gets a solid 4K upgrade, especially in fine detail and brighter HDR highlights. The image is clean and glossy, but the reduced grain makes it feel more digital than film-like. Fortunately, the Dolby Atmos track is outstanding and gives the spaceship scenes and action plenty of impact. The disc includes both the Theatrical Cut and Special Edition.
Abyss 4K UHD 02/24 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.0
The Abyss gets a strong 4K upgrade, especially in its fine detail, underwater colors, and bright HDR highlights. It is not a perfect transfer since the grain is often very limited and a few visual effects look rough in 4K, but the presentation is still impressive. The Atmos sound is outstanding, with excellent surround movement and clean dialogue. Both the theatrical version and Special Edition ar...
True Lies 4K UHD 01/24 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.0
True Lies is still a hugely entertaining action-comedy, and the Dolby Atmos track gives the big set pieces plenty of impact. The 4K picture has strong detail and vivid HDR colors, but the processed, overly digital look may bother people who prefer a more natural film appearance.
Conan the Barbarian 4K 01/24 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.0
Conan the Barbarian looks noticeably better than the older Blu-ray, especially in its detail, colors, and darker scenes. The picture is not perfect because the grain can look uneven, but the Dolby Atmos audio is excellent and gives the film a much more immersive presentation. The disc also includes the Theatrical, International, and Extended Cuts.
Almost Famous 4K UHD 06/21 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…5.0
Almost Famous still hits, and this 4K UHD looks fantastic with Dolby Vision that keeps the film grain natural and boosts detail, color, and contrast. Sound stays on the legacy DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, which works well, even if it is not upgraded to anything like Dolby Atmos.
Core 4K 03/23 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.0
The Core is a fun, loud disaster thriller, and the 4K UHD disc mostly sticks the landing. The video looks only β€œokay” at times, with grain and processing that can be uneven, so the upgrade feels small and inconsistent compared to the Blu-ray. The audio is the strong point, with a solid DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that has plenty of surround and low-end.
Italian Job (2003) 4K UHD 05/23 Blu-ray (Rental)
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…4.0
The Italian Job (2003) looks like a real upgrade on this 4K UHD disc, with Dolby Vision that gives more lifelike colors and deeper blacks. The picture quality is solid but not perfect, with some grain that can look a bit inconsistent from scene to scene. Sound is the real win, since the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 upgrade is clearer, fuller, and more immersive even without Atmos. Overall, it is a wort...
